A Snake in the Hand

Yesterday was a interesting trip to the river. We ended up not getting brambles, taking very few pictures and being home much earlier than anticipated. All because of a snake.

The river is just finishing the annual "dry up". So Jojo and I decided to walk down the river bed for a change. We found an old table that had washed downstream, legs in the air as an invitation to all that walked by, so we rolled it over - SNAKE! Now, this was not a bad thing - we quickly captured a very attractive little garter snake. Garter snakes have an interesting defense mechanism - they crap on you. Now it works with many predators - after all, they catch the snakes IN THEIR MOUTH! Jojo is a bright child, so he gave me the privelege of doing the catching. Immediately after watching this process, he named the snake Nugget.

So, since I hadn't brought any transport bags, we carried Nugget home. Carrying a small, extremely nimble little snake makes taking pictures very hard...so I didn't take any. When we arrived home, the new addition called for a quick enclosure set-up, and several hand-washings. Miss Penny is thrilled at the addition of a snake, because she love snakes more than just about any other critter we could catch, especially one that craps on you every time you pick it up.

Nugget will stay with us long enough for Jojo to learn a bit about how garter snakes, then we'll take him back down to the river before the real cold weather sets in. In all the excitement I never got any brambles, so I ended up cutting some late last night - imagine, brambles, dark, me...Fun, eh?

Hello!

EWwwwwww...snakes. I liked the lion story much better!

I'm glad the garter snake will be going back to the river bed.

HI PJ:
I remember back in the 6th grade when one of the boys in our class put the class mascot (a giant king snake) in Melissa's desk. She opened up her desk and really freaked out. It was funny, but at the same time it wasn't funny. She was scared stiff.
I'm not scared of snakes if I know I won't be harmed. I stay away from the nasty ones.
I wanted a picture of the snake pooping on you. Now there's a picture! :-P
Take care and have a great day!
Love & Hugs... Annie
